New Istanbul Airport opened on 29 October 2018. We expect that in the coming years it will become the world’s largest passenger traffic. The first commercial flight will take place on October 31.

Earlier, the presidential plane of the country’s leader Tayyip Erdogan landed at the new airport, becoming the first aircraft to land there. After that, he and his wife Emine Erdogan traveled around the new airport behind the wheel of an electric car and bought the first symbolic ticket.

“Istanbul is not only the biggest city in Turkey, but also the most important brand of the country. So we gave it the name “Istanbul airport”. I hope that its opening will benefit not only Turkey, but also the world as a whole,” Erdogan said at the opening ceremony.

Erdogan called historic the upcoming opening of Istanbul’s largest airport in the world. And the airport itself is an indicator of the achievements, power and will of Turkey on the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Republic.

He added that the new airport will become one of the world’s major hubs and will change traffic between continents. Until the new airport is fully operational, Ataturk international airport will continue to operate.
“After the new airport will workat full capacity, Ataturk airport will retain its status. Therefore, it will be closed for commercial flights. Ataturk airport will continue its activities under the same name. But now it will become a platform for such events as aviation fairs and other activities,” the Turkish leader added.

The tender for the construction of the airport won a consortium of companies Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-MaPa-Kalyon with a proposal worth 26.14 billion euros.
Six billion euros were allocated for the implementation of the first phase of the airport construction. Construction of the airport lasted four years, 10 thousand workers were involved.
The total area of the airport is 76.5 million square meters.
